My 15 year old son Cody and I took a short backpack trip on 4/25-4/27 2008 to the Champion Spark Plug Mine north of Bishop, CA. It is about an hour and a half from the end of the jeep road at about 6000' to the main camp at 7550', also known as Black Eagle Camp. From there it is about 90 minutes to the upper camp at 9000'. There are rustic cabins that have been kept up by volunteers. It is cool to stay here as you feel like you hav gone back in time. The mine closed in 1946.
